Lalon Death

Tomb of disciples in front of Lalon Shah’s shrine
On October 17, 1890, Lalan died at the age of 116 at his home in Cheuriya, Kumarkhali, Kushtia. He was suffering from stomach problems and hand and foot gland problems since about a month before his death. He did not eat anything except milk when he was sick. At that time he wanted to eat fish. On the day of his death he sang and played until 5 a.m. and at one point said to his disciples, “I am walking”, and died shortly thereafter. Neither Hindu nor Muslim religious practices were observed after his death as there was no order or wish of his. According to his advice, his mausoleum was built inside a room in his Akhara at Chewria.

Even today, bowlers from all over Bangladesh and West Bengal gather in Chewria in October to pay their respects to Lalan. Twelve days after his death, he was first termed as ‘Mahatma’ in an article published in Hitkari edited by Mir Musharraf Hossain. The author of the composition is Raicharan.
